Find Your Why: How to Write Your Mission Statement

January 8, 2021

Every business, company, or individual had a reason for starting their business. Maybe for you, it was because you were frustrated with the way something was being done in your industry, and you had a better method. Or perhaps you saw a gap in the market and knew you could offer a service to your clients that no one else was offering. Whatever that original “spark” was it plays more of a powerful role in your business than you thought.

In his book Start with the Why, Sinek goes into why some businesses have been more successful than others and suggests that a business’ sole reason (why) for existing can have a direct impact on the success.

Is your WHY powerful enough to keep your business afloat or equipped for long-term success?

Your business’ mission statement or reason for being can not only be a stronghold of motivation when the storms come in, but it can also be a grounding point for your employees or other members who partake in making decisions for your business.

Why does it matter to have it actually written out in the form of a statement? When customers have direct access to your mission statement and can see your values, mission, and reason for being they may be more inclined to chose you over a competitor strictly because of your values or why.

HOW TO FIND YOUR WHY

Ideas to Stimulate Your Thinking:

Write a list of things you stand by or believe in

Do you have a mantra or motto you always say?

Is there a particular subject or cause that you feel extremely passionate about?

Is there a skill or talent that you have that could benefit others?

Write it Out

Your “WHY” statement should be exactly that: a statement. I found it helpful to write in as such

[Your business or your name] believes that ___________________.

Example:  Southwest airlines believes in the equality of people and providing customers with the highest level of customer service. (They make this known by their unclassified seating.)

OUR WHY STATEMENT: HUMM Collective believes that good businesses deserve to have a compelling brand story and powerful digital presence. We know you that your business has the power to change people’s lives. We want to help you get the attention you deserve.

ACTION STEP: Write your WHY statement today and post it in a public place where either you or your team can see it as a reminder on a daily basis.
